Like many other historians, Perry Gauci highlighted, in an article published in French in 2007, the scarcity of accounting sources for English companies in the 17th century. That is why the accounts of the Ashe family are so valuable, and deserve at least quantitative and chronological, or even cartographic, exploitation, to trace for example the circulation of bills of exchange or the products bought and sold. In summary, John Gaisford’s work should have a very attentive reception from economic historians working on this side of the Channel, because this irreplaceable contribution of accounting and commercial data sheds new light on the rich and complex economic era of the first half of the 17th century.
Edouard Delobette has published important articles on the trade of Le Havre and Caen in Normandy. He has now completing a book on the trade between Rouen and Rotterdam in the late 17th Century.
